Extreme weather and other natural disasters can impede
transformer operations and subsequently disrupt the
country’s electrical power supply. While rare events, there
isn’t a customer within the United States that hasn’t
experienced at least a temporary power outage due to
stormy weather. However, another type of catastrophic
event threatens the electric power supply in the U.S.
A combination of aging infrastructure and global supply
chain issues compromises power generation and
distribution systems with disruption at any time.
Given the current aging or under-resourced grid systems,
keeping the nation’s existing transformers in reliable
working order is imperative. Fortunately, there are best
practices that are easy to implement that can help operators
gauge the health of current transformers for more reliable
operations. In fact, many industry experts point to hydrogen
sensing as a critical “engine check” early warning system
that operators could deploy to great effect today.
