Eyewash and Irrigation (IEC 62485-2 section 8.3, ANSI Z358.1)
Eyewash stations provide emergency 昀氀ushing of electrolyte from accidental exposure from electrolyte.
ANSI Z358.1 is the most complete standard to follow.
n Eyewash stations are designed to provide immediate flushing of the eyes in case of accidental
exposure to electrolytes.
n Flow rate: The standard requires a flow rate of at least 0.4 gallons per minute (1.5 liters per minute)
at 30 PSI for a minimum of 15 minutes.
n Operation: Eyewash stations should be hands-free and activated in one second or less.
n Bottle kits: While bottle kits can be used to irrigate skin contact, they are considered supplementary
and should not replace a main eyewash station.
n Water temperature: The water should be tepid, between 60°F and 100°F (16°C and 38°C).
n Spray pattern: The spray should be a full cone pattern that covers both eyes simultaneously.
n Location: Eyewash stations should be located within a reasonable distance from where hazardous
materials are handled, typically no more than 10 feet away.
Other regulations that cover eyewash include EN 15154, DIN 12899-3:2009.
Record Keeping & Certi昀椀cations
Keep detailed records of safety inspections, maintenance activities, and any incidents or accidents. This documentation can be used to demonstrate compliance with safety standards. If applicable, consider obtaining certi昀椀cations from recognized bodies to demonstrate compliance with speci昀椀c standards or industry best practices.
AHJ enforcement of IEC 62485-2: While AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) may not explicitly reference IEC
62485-2 in their local regulations, the principles and requirements outlined in the standard are often incorporated
into broader safety codes and regulations. Therefore, companies should
expect their compliance with IEC 62485-2 to be assessed as part of
broader safety inspections and audits conducted by AHJs. It’s essential
for companies to stay informed about the latest safety standards and
regulations and to consult with experts or regulatory authorities to
ensure compliance with all applicable requirements.
