IEC Standards
Many IEC standards are related to battery safety including the design and construction of the batteries,
certi昀椀cation of those designs and safety standards for sites to follow to protect the site, other equipment
and personnel, storage and disposal. Below is a list of common IEC standards used in Europe and globally
relating to standby and energy storage batteries:
IEC 60086-1 (rev 2019-11)
This standard covers primary cells and batteries, which are non-rechargeable. It provides general
safety requirements for handling, storage, and disposal of primary batteries.
IEC 60086-2 (rev 2019-11)
This standard covers secondary cells and batteries, which are rechargeable. It also provides
general safety requirements, but it focuses on secondary batteries and their speci昀椀c characteristics,
such as charging and discharging cycles.
IEC 62133 (rev 2021-03)
This standard speci昀椀cally addresses lithium-ion batteries, a type of secondary battery that has
become increasingly popular due to its high energy density. It provides detailed safety requirements
and testing procedures for lithium-ion batteries to ensure their safe operation.
IEC 61960 (rev 2021-03)
This standard also focuses on lithium-ion batteries, but it is speci昀椀cally for portable applications.
It covers safety requirements related to the use of lithium-ion batteries in devices such as
smartphones, laptops, and cameras.
IEC 60086-5 (rev 2019-11)
This standard covers stationary lead-acid batteries, which are used in applications like uninterruptible
power supplies (UPS) and emergency power systems. It provides safety requirements speci昀椀c to
stationary lead-acid batteries, such as internal pressure control and electrolyte leakage prevention.
IEC 62485-2 (rev 2018-06)
This standard also covers stationary secondary batteries, but it has a broader scope than IEC 60086-5.
It covers various types of stationary secondary batteries, including lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, and
nickel-metal hydride batteries. It provides safety requirements for these batteries, considering their
speci昀椀c characteristics and applications.
Risk & Hazard Analysis
Ensuring Compliance with Safety Standards for Stationary Battery Sites in Europe
European companies operating stationary battery sites need to demonstrate compliance with various safety
standards to ensure the safe operation of their facilities. These standards often incorporate requirements
outlined in IEC 62485-2 but may also include additional national or regional regulations.
Key Steps Companies Can Take to Prove Compliance Include:
Identify applicable standards that apply to their stationary battery site, considering factors such as the type of
battery, location, and intended use. In addition to IEC 62485-2, relevant standards might include EN 50604 which
is a European standard for stationary battery installations. National regulations in individual countries may have
speci昀椀c regulations or interpretations that need to be followed.
